RIFFS

June 8 to July 7, 2012

Opening reception: Friday, June 8, 2012, 6 - 9 pm

SLAG Gallery is pleased to announce “RIFFS”, a solo exhibition of recent works by Max Dunlop.

With a subdued palette, a muted melancholy atmosphere and very sensitive strokes, Dunlop’s works evoke the immediacy of a passing moment.

The paint application has a grave force, yet on the smooth aluminum surface it heightens into a painterly transparency.

“Sitting in my studio, digesting The City. My sketches, photos, memories, and past paintings: the world becomes less external: It transforms into a symbol of where I am at that time: an open-ended metaphor with a fluid interpretation.”

“Dunlop’s work represents the present, yet it is rendered in a way that makes it appear as though it were a degraded photograph from the past. The realms he wishes to reveal to us are our own physical cityscapes, yet he must do so via the prism of his own perceptions and memories.” Richard Unwin
